12 Stuivers (Dutch West India Company; Recife)

The 12 stuivers coin was minted in 1654 in Recife, Brazil, during the final days of the Dutch West India Company's occupation of New Holland. As the Dutch forces faced increasing pressure from Portuguese insurrectionists, the local colonial administration suffered from a severe lack of circulating currency. These emergency issues were struck by counterstamping existing silver coins or casting crude planchets to facilitate trade and pay the garrison, representing a desperate effort to maintain economic stability in a collapsing colony.

The design of these emergency issues is notably austere, often bearing little more than a simple countermark or crude denomination stamp to signify their value. Created out of military necessity rather than aesthetic intent, the coins reflect the pragmatic and often hurried nature of siege currency. Because they were produced under duress and intended for immediate circulation in a volatile theater of war, they serve as tangible records of the waning Dutch presence in South America, which effectively ended shortly after the coins were issued.
