Where it came from
The 2 Cash coin bearing the Yongli Tongbao inscription was issued during the brief but significant reign of the Yongli Emperor, the final monarch of the Southern Ming dynasty. As the Ming loyalist movement retreated to the south and eventually Taiwan, these coins served as a crucial symbol of legitimacy, intended to maintain the administrative continuity of the Ming state in the face of the encroaching Qing forces.
The design features the distinct seal script common to the period, reflecting a deliberate attempt to project a sense of classical authority and traditional governance. These coins were minted in various locations under the control of Koxinga and his successors in the Kingdom of Tungning, emphasizing the maritime power's role as the last bastion of Ming culture against the newly established Qing dynasty.
