Where it came from
The 2006 Australian 2-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as part of a specialized proof set marking the final year of production for the denomination. Following the removal of the 1-cent and 2-cent coins from general circulation in 1992 due to high production costs relative to their face value, these coins were struck periodically thereafter solely for inclusion in annual collector sets, catering to numismatists rather than commerce.
The coin features the iconic portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, introduced in 1999 to replace the Raphael Maklouf design. The reverse showcases the celebrated frill-necked lizard illustration by Stuart Devlin, which has graced the Australian 2-cent piece since the introduction of decimal currency in 1966. This particular 2006 proof issue is distinguished by its fine silver composition, a departure from the bronze alloys used in circulating versions, reflecting its status as a commemorative keepsake for the hobbyist market.
