Where it came from
The 2 dinar coin was issued by the Bank of Algeria as part of a modernization of the national currency following economic reforms in the late 1980s. This specific issue features a design highlighting the country's rich biodiversity, prominently displaying the Fennec fox, which is the national animal of Algeria and serves as a symbol of the desert landscape.
The coin was minted in stainless steel, reflecting a shift toward more durable and cost-effective materials for circulating coinage during that period. The aesthetic is characterized by clean, minimalist lines typical of late 20th-century North African currency design, intended to be both functional for daily commerce and reflective of a strong sense of national identity.
