Where it came from
Released in 2023 by the Perth Mint, this two-dollar coin is part of an ongoing Australian bullion series that celebrates the nation's diverse marine life. Issued as legal tender under the authority of the Australian government, the coin features the sixth definitive portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, marking one of the final instances of her likeness appearing on Australian currency following her passing in 2022.
The reverse design captures the whale shark, the world's largest fish, rendered in fine silver. The illustration emphasizes the shark's distinctive spotted pattern and massive scale, reflecting the Perth Mint's commitment to high-relief artistic representation in their bullion programs. It is regarded by collectors as both a reliable store of value and a tribute to Western Australia’s Ningaloo Reef, where these majestic creatures are a significant ecological draw.
