Where it came from
The 2023 Australian 30-dollar Whale Shark platinum bullion coin is part of the Perth Mint's broader program of legal tender coins celebrating marine life. Issued in the name of Australia, the series serves to highlight the rich biodiversity of the Ningaloo Reef, a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its significant whale shark population. The coin is crafted from one ounce of .9995 fine platinum, positioning it as both a bullion investment and a thematic collectible for numismatists focused on nature-themed coinage.
The design features the sixth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, created by artist Jody Clark, which became the standard for Australian coinage in the final years of her reign. The reverse side depicts a detailed, dynamic representation of a whale shark, the world's largest fish species, swimming through its oceanic habitat. The artistry aims to balance biological accuracy with the aesthetic requirements of a bullion release, reflecting the Perth Mint’s commitment to high-quality production standards and the promotion of Australia's unique marine environmental heritage.
