2 Dollars - Elizabeth II (Iriomote cat)

The 2018 Cook Islands 2 Dollars coin featuring the Iriomote cat is part of a broader numismatic series dedicated to endangered wildlife. Issued as legal tender for the Cook Islands, these coins are primarily produced for the collector market, utilizing high-quality minting techniques to highlight threatened species. The choice of the Iriomote cat—a critically endangered feline found only on a small Japanese island—reflects the global interest in biodiversity conservation through commemorative numismatics.

The design emphasizes realism and detail, characteristic of modern commemorative coins intended to serve as both currency and small-scale art. While the specific artist is often part of a larger design team at a contract mint rather than a singular named illustrator, the visual focus is on the distinct features of the cat against a stylized backdrop. Upon release, such pieces were met with moderate interest among collectors of animal-themed coins, valued primarily for their thematic appeal and technical strike quality rather than historical circulation significance.
