5 Dollars - Elizabeth II (Shirakawa-go)

Issued by the Cook Islands in 2013, this five-dollar coin is part of a thematic series celebrating UNESCO World Heritage sites. The choice of Shirakawa-go, a Japanese village renowned for its traditional gassho-zukuri farmhouses, reflects the numismatic trend of highlighting global cultural landmarks to appeal to international collectors. These coins were produced under the authority of the Cook Islands government, often featuring specialized minting techniques such as color application or relief detailing to emphasize the architectural uniqueness of the site.

The design focus for this piece centers on the distinct triangular, steep-thatched roofs of the Shirakawa-go dwellings, which are engineered to withstand heavy snowfall. While the obverse maintains the standard portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, the reverse serves as a miniature commemorative canvas. The coin was marketed primarily to architectural enthusiasts and collectors of world currency, recognized for its detailed depiction of the Japanese village rather than its circulation value, as the piece was intended largely as a non-circulating legal tender collectible.
