Where it came from
This 2 dollar coin was issued by the Cook Islands in 2002 to commemorate the FIFA World Cup held in South Korea and Japan. Like many commemorative issues from the Cook Islands during this period, the coin was produced as a legal tender collectible intended for international numismatic markets, reflecting the country's frequent collaborations with private mints to highlight major global sporting events.
The design of the coin typically features a profile portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, as is standard for currency in the Cook Islands, while the reverse showcases thematic imagery related to association football. These pieces were marketed primarily to sports enthusiasts and collectors of commemorative currency, focusing on the cultural phenomenon of the World Cup rather than circulation usage.
