Where it came from
The 2018 2 Dollar coin featuring The Walking Dead was minted by the Cook Islands as part of a trend in numismatics that blends legal tender with pop culture collectibles. Produced during a period when the Cook Islands frequently issued themed coins to appeal to international fans of film and television, this piece serves as a commemorative item rather than a standard circulating currency. It reflects the global influence of the television franchise, which saw a surge in merchandise and licensing during the late 2010s.
The design was crafted to capture the grim, gritty aesthetic of the series, utilizing high-quality relief work to highlight the iconic imagery associated with the brand. While these coins are minted to strict specifications, they are primarily intended for the numismatic market and enthusiasts of the horror genre. Critics of such issues often note the departure from traditional heraldic designs, yet these coins remain popular among collectors who value the intersection of modern media history and traditional minting techniques.
