Where it came from
The 2016 Australian 20-cent coin was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 90th birthday of Queen Elizabeth II. This special release served as a numismatic tribute to the monarch's long reign and her status as the constitutional head of state in Australia. The design incorporates the official 90th birthday emblem, reflecting the formal commemorative tradition of the mint to mark significant milestones in the royal family's history.
The obverse features the standard effigy of Queen Elizabeth II designed by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had been the official coinage portrait for Australia since 1999. The reverse was designed by Royal Australian Mint artists to highlight the celebratory nature of the anniversary. Upon its release, the coin was primarily distributed through circulation and as part of collector sets, where it was noted by the numismatic community for its understated design in contrast to the more elaborate commemorative coins typically produced for royal anniversaries.
