Where it came from
Released by the Royal Australian Mint in 2008, this silver proof coin commemorates the bicentenary of the Rum Rebellion, a pivotal event in Australian colonial history where the New South Wales Corps deposed Governor William Bligh in 1808. The coin was issued as part of a historical series intended to reflect on the complexities of early governance and the civil disobedience that shaped the Australian identity.
The reverse design features an artistic interpretation of the mutiny, incorporating symbolic elements of the period and the rum currency that fueled the conflict. The obverse displays the Ian Rank-Broadley effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, which was the standard portrait for Australian legal tender at the time. The piece was struck in .999 fine silver to a proof standard, catering to collectors interested in the intersection of numismatics and significant moments in the nation's political evolution.
