Where it came from
The Royal Australian Mint issued this 20-cent commemorative coin in 2016 to mark the 400th anniversary of Dirk Hartog’s historic landfall on Western Australia's coast in 1616. Hartog, a Dutch explorer aboard the Eendracht, became the first European known to have landed on the western coast of the continent, an event historically significant for marking the earliest recorded European presence in Australia.
The reverse design features a depiction of the Eendracht ship and the iconic pewter plate Hartog famously left behind as a record of his arrival, which is now housed in the Rijksmuseum. The obverse showcases Ian Rank-Broadley’s mature effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, consistent with Australian coinage standards of the era. The piece was well-received by collectors interested in Australian colonial history and maritime exploration, serving as a formal tribute to the foundational interactions between European explorers and the Australian landmass.
