Where it came from
The Royal Australian Mint issued this commemorative 20-cent coin in 2013 to mark the 25th anniversary of the opening of Parliament House in Canberra. The original building was opened in 1988, designed by the architectural firm Mitchell/Giurgola & Thorp, who intended for the structure to reflect the Australian landscape through its unique grass-covered roof and prominent flag mast. The coin serves as a numismatic celebration of the seat of Australian democracy.
The reverse design features a stylized representation of the Parliament House architecture, capturing the iconic silhouette of the building's central mast. It was crafted by the Mint's internal design team to highlight the building's distinct geometric integration with Capital Hill. The obverse features the standard effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Ian Rank-Broadley, which had been the definitive portrait on Australian coinage since 1999.
