20 Cents - Elizabeth II (4th Portrait - Masterpieces in Silver - 1995 United Nations)

The 1998 Australian 20-cent coin was issued as part of the Royal Australian Mint's prestigious Masterpieces in Silver series, a program established to provide high-quality numismatic releases for dedicated collectors. This specific year commemorated the 50th anniversary of the United Nations, reflecting Australia's long-standing diplomatic commitment to the organization. The series was designed to showcase both technical minting excellence and significant historical narratives, often utilizing the finest precious metal compositions to distinguish these issues from standard circulating currency.

The coin features the fourth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by sculptor Ian Rank-Broadley. Introduced in the late 1990s, this portrait was intended to present a more realistic and mature depiction of the monarch, moving away from the idealized styles of previous decades. The reverse design for this commemorative issue was crafted to symbolize international cooperation and unity, balancing the weight of the United Nations theme with the traditional Australian iconography required for legal tender status. It remains a sought-after piece for those documenting the transition of royal portraiture and the commemorative history of the Australian mint.
