20 Cents - Elizabeth II (4th Portrait - Masterpieces in Silver - 1954 Royal Visit Florin)

The 1998 Masterpieces in Silver collection was issued by the Royal Australian Mint to celebrate the history of Australian coinage through high-quality commemorative restrikes. This specific piece pays homage to the 1954 Royal Visit Florin, which was originally produced to commemorate the first visit to Australia by a reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. The original 1954 design was created by the renowned Australian sculptor William Leslie Bowles, who featured the Queen on the obverse and a complex, symbolic reverse depicting the Royal Crown, the Commonwealth Star, and stalks of wheat, reflecting the post-war optimism and loyalty of the era.

For this 1998 commemorative release, the Royal Australian Mint utilized Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth portrait of Elizabeth II on the obverse to align with contemporary Australian coinage standards while retaining the aesthetic integrity of the 1954 design on the reverse. Struck in sterling silver, these coins were marketed primarily to collectors and numismatists as a tribute to the transition of Australian currency and the endurance of the monarchy. The series was well-regarded for its presentation and its commitment to preserving the historical artistry of mid-century Australian commemorative coins.
