Where it came from
Released in 2012, this 20-cent coin was part of the Royal Australian Mint’s 'Service and Sacrifice' series, specifically the 'Shores Under Siege' collection. The series was designed to commemorate the 70th anniversary of the Second World War reaching Australian shores in 1942, reflecting on the profound impact the conflict had on the nation's home front.
The reverse design features a poignant illustration of an air raid shelter, a symbol of the anxiety and defensive measures taken by civilians during the attacks on Darwin and other northern coastal towns. The imagery was crafted by Royal Australian Mint artists to evoke the historical atmosphere of the era, and the coin was widely collected by history enthusiasts and numismatists as a tangible piece of Australian wartime remembrance.
