Where it came from
The 1917 Mexican 20 Pesos gold coin, commonly referred to as the Azteca, was authorized under the monetary reform of 1905. It was minted during a turbulent period in Mexican history following the height of the Revolution, serving as a symbol of economic stabilization and national pride. The coin was designed to showcase Mexico's rich pre-Columbian heritage, specifically highlighting the cultural legacy of the Aztec civilization.
The obverse of the coin features the national coat of arms, while the reverse displays a stylized depiction of the Aztec calendar stone, an iconic artifact discovered in Mexico City. The intricate design was crafted to convey a sense of historical continuity and permanence during a time of significant political transition. Upon its release, it became a standard for gold circulation and remains a highly regarded piece for numismatists due to its historical significance and artistic representation of Mexican identity.
