Where it came from
The 50 Pesos 'Centenario' was first minted in 1921 to commemorate the centennial of Mexico's independence from Spain, which had been achieved in 1821. Commissioned by the Mexican government, the coin was designed to serve as a symbol of national pride and economic stability, featuring the Winged Victory—an iconic statue representing independence—on the obverse and the national coat of arms on the reverse.
The coin's aesthetic, a blend of Art Nouveau and classical motifs, was executed by the sculptor Emilio del Moral. It became a hallmark of Mexican numismatics due to its high gold purity and striking size. While initially intended for circulation, the coin was eventually recognized primarily as a bullion piece, valued as much for its historical significance and artistic merit as for its metallic content.
