Where it came from
The 20 Réis coin minted in 1722 during the reign of João V reflects the immense wealth generated by the Brazilian gold rush in the province of Minas Gerais. During this period, the Portuguese crown asserted rigorous control over colonial coinage, mandating that regional issues be struck with standardized metallic purity to facilitate trade and taxation within the colony's burgeoning mining economy.
The design, produced at the Lisbon mint, features the royal coat of arms on the obverse and the characteristic crown with four arches above the denomination on the reverse. These pieces were intended for circulation specifically within Brazil, serving as a functional tool for the administration of the Portuguese Empire as it navigated the logistical challenges of managing distant, resource-rich territories.
