20 Réis - José I (Countermarked 10 Réis)

The 20 Réis coin of José I reflects the economic complexities of the Portuguese Empire in the mid-18th century. Minted in 1752, this copper coinage served the daily transactional needs of the Brazilian colony, where precious metal shortages necessitated the circulation of base metal currency. The design, bearing the royal coat of arms and the royal monogram, emphasized the reach of the Portuguese crown during an era of significant colonial administration under the Marquis of Pombal.

The specific countermark of 10 Réis found on many of these issues represents a fiscal necessity rather than a change in design philosophy. Following the 1750 monetary reforms, the Portuguese government revalued existing copper stock to maintain currency parity and combat inflation, requiring existing coins to be stamped with a new value. These countermarked specimens are studied by numismatists today as tangible evidence of the administrative efforts to stabilize colonial currency in the face of fluctuating bullion supplies.
