Where it came from
The 3 Euro Devil scorpionfish coin is part of Austria's long-running 'Colorful Creatures' series, minted by the Austrian Mint. Introduced to appeal to both collectors and those interested in marine biology, the coin features the distinct, camouflaged appearance of the Scorpaenopsis diabolus. It follows the tradition of using color-printed elements on a base metal to bring the subject matter to life in a way that standard relief carving cannot.
The coin was designed by the Austrian Mint's creative team, emphasizing hyper-realistic color application against a textured, metallic background to mimic the seabed habitat of the scorpionfish. Since its inception, the series has been noted for its accessibility and focus on biodiversity, receiving steady praise from numismatic circles for its technical execution and the innovative use of glow-in-the-dark or high-contrast color technologies, making it a staple of modern European commemorative currency.
