Where it came from
The 3-euro coin series featuring the crocodile was issued by the Austrian Mint in 2017 as the fourth installment in their 'Coloring the Creatures' series. This series was designed to appeal to both numismatists and younger collectors, utilizing vibrant, glow-in-the-dark color applications to depict various wildlife species. The coins are minted in copper-nickel and are legal tender within Austria, though they are primarily intended as commemorative collectibles rather than for active circulation.
The design of the 2017 crocodile coin captures the prehistoric and predatory nature of the reptile, with the creature's silhouette extending across the face of the coin in striking detail. The Austrian Mint collaborated with their in-house design team to balance technical precision with the unconventional use of color, a hallmark of this series. The coin was well-received upon its release for its high-quality finish and its creative departure from traditional, monochromatic commemorative currency.
