Where it came from
The 3000 Riels coin was issued by the National Bank of Cambodia in 2013 to commemorate the 60th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Cambodia and Japan. This commemorative issue serves as a symbol of the deepening bilateral ties and ongoing economic cooperation between the two nations, which have been strengthened through various infrastructure projects and cultural exchanges.
The design of the coin features motifs reflective of the cooperative history shared by the two countries, including architectural elements and traditional patterns that honor both Khmer and Japanese aesthetics. Like many commemorative coins minted by the National Bank of Cambodia, the piece was produced as a collector's item intended to mark a significant diplomatic milestone, reflecting a period of increased foreign aid and diplomatic alignment during the early 21st century.
