3000 Riels (Great Wall of China)

The 3000 Riels coin featuring the Great Wall of China is part of a series of commemorative issues produced by the National Bank of Cambodia in the early 2000s. These coins were minted primarily for the international collector market rather than for circulation, serving as a way to celebrate international landmarks and cultural sites. The decision to feature the Great Wall reflects the era's focus on thematic numismatics, which frequently highlighted architectural wonders to appeal to a broad base of hobbyists.

The design follows the aesthetic conventions common to commemorative legal tender coins of this period, often utilizing a combination of proof-like finishes and relief work to capture the scale of the structure. While produced under the authority of the Cambodian government, these items are emblematic of a broader trend where smaller nations authorized thematic minting projects to generate interest among global numismatists. The reception has been largely confined to the community of world coin collectors, who value the series for its specific topical themes.
