Where it came from
The 40 Réis coin minted in Pernambuco around 1700 reflects a pivotal period in Brazilian colonial history. During this era, the Portuguese administration established regional mints to address chronic currency shortages in the colony, specifically to facilitate local trade and tax collection in the prosperous yet distant Pernambuco region. These coins were produced under the authority of King Pedro II, serving as a functional tool for economic stabilization in a territory heavily dependent on the sugar trade.
The design of these coins is characterized by its stark, utilitarian aesthetic, typical of colonial coinage struck under pressure. They feature the royal arms of Portugal on one side and the denomination on the other, reflecting the influence of Iberian numismatic traditions. While they were not intended to be artistic masterpieces, they are highly regarded by modern collectors as vital physical evidence of the early administrative efforts to codify a monetary system in South America.
