Where it came from
The 40 réis coin was minted during the reign of King Pedro II of Portugal, a period defined by the colonial administration of Brazil. Struck at the Rio de Janeiro mint, these copper coins were intended to facilitate daily commerce within the colony, providing a low-denomination currency for the growing urban centers and the expanding trade networks of the late 17th century.
The design follows the standard aesthetic for Portuguese colonial coinage of the era, featuring the coat of arms of Portugal on the obverse and the denomination marked within a beaded border on the reverse. These pieces were struck by hand, resulting in the characteristic irregularities in shape and strike quality common to the period, reflecting the pragmatic and utilitarian nature of colonial economic tools.
