5 Cents - Elizabeth II (1st portrait, steel)

The 1953 Canadian five-cent coin holds historical significance as the inaugural year of Queen Elizabeth II's portrait on Canadian currency. Following the passing of King George VI, the Royal Canadian Mint transitioned to the new monarch, necessitating a redesign of the obverse. This specific issue is distinguished by the 'no shoulder strap' variety, a detail that became a point of interest for numismatists when the design was later modified to include the strap.

The portrait was created by Mary Gillick, a British sculptor whose design was selected through a national competition to provide a youthful, regal representation of the Queen. Her work was lauded for its elegance and classic profile, marking a departure from the more formal depictions of previous sovereigns. While the steel composition reflects the mid-century industrial shift in coinage production, the 1953 series remains a cornerstone for collectors tracking the transition from the colonial designs of the Victorian era to the modern Canadian identity.
