5 Cents - Elizabeth II (1st Portrait)

The Australian 5-cent coin was first introduced in 1966 as part of the nation's transition to decimal currency, replacing the pre-decimal sixpence. The 2019 issue features the iconic depiction of the Australian echidna on the reverse, a design by Stuart Devlin that has remained a constant staple of the denomination since its inception. This specific year holds historical significance as it marks one of the final years the coin was minted featuring the youthful first portrait of Queen Elizabeth II by Arnold Machin, representing a long-standing continuity in Commonwealth numismatics.

The obverse design by Arnold Machin was selected to convey a regal and timeless image of the monarch. When first introduced to the decimal series, the portrait was lauded for its clarity and balance, fitting seamlessly onto the small diameter of the 5-cent piece. By 2019, this design had become a deeply recognizable fixture of Australian pocket change, valued by collectors and the public alike as a representative piece of the late Elizabethan era's monetary history.
