Lore

Why it matters

This Australian five-cent piece is a fine example of a gold proof coin, a format prized by collectors for the meticulous strike and reflective finish applied to its surface. As a commemorative issue featuring the current portrait of the monarch, it represents both a standard unit of currency and a deliberate object of numismatic interest.

Provenance

Where it came from

The 2020 Australian five-cent piece featuring the sixth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II was issued by the Royal Australian Mint as part of the annual circulating and collector coinage series. This specific gold proof edition was produced for numismatic enthusiasts to mark the continued evolution of the Commonwealth coinage, maintaining the denomination's traditional size and composition specifications while highlighting the transition in royal portraiture.

The obverse features the sixth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark and first introduced in 2019, which depicts the monarch wearing the Royal Diamond Diadem. This portrait replaced the long-standing fifth effigy by Ian Rank-Broadley, aiming for a more contemporary and refined representation of the Queen. The reverse retains the iconic design by Stuart Devlin, which features the echidna, a signature Australian monotreme that has appeared on the five-cent coin since decimalization in 1966.
