Where it came from
The 2023 Australian 5-cent proof coin features the sixth effigy of Queen Elizabeth II, designed by Jody Clark. This portrait was introduced to Australian coinage in 2019 to maintain consistency with the Royal Mint’s specifications. Following the passing of the late Queen in 2022, the Royal Australian Mint issued these final proof-quality tributes to mark the conclusion of her historic seventy-year reign, capturing a moment of transition in numismatic history.
Struck in fine silver, this piece serves as a commemorative specimen rather than a standard circulating coin. The design retains the iconic echidna motif by Stuart Devlin, which has graced the reverse of the 5-cent denomination since the inception of decimal currency in Australia in 1966. Its production in a high-relief proof finish reflects a tradition of honoring royal milestones through precision minting, ensuring that the legacy of the late monarch is preserved within the national numismatic record.
