Provenance

Where it came from

The 1858 five-cent piece holds the distinction of being the first five-cent coin issued for the Province of Canada. Minted during the reign of Queen Victoria, it was struck in .925 sterling silver rather than the later nickel composition, a choice that reflected the financial standards and colonial relationship with Great Britain at the time. This issue emerged shortly after the passage of the Currency Act of 1853, which sought to establish a decimal-based currency system that would better align Canada with the monetary units used in the United States.

The design of the coin was executed by Leonard Charles Wyon, a prominent engraver at the Royal Mint in London who was responsible for many of the British colonial issues of the nineteenth century. The obverse features a portrait of a young Queen Victoria, while the reverse depicts a crown surrounded by a wreath of maple leaves. The inclusion of maple leaves is historically significant, as it represents one of the earliest official appearances of the maple leaf as a national symbol on Canadian coinage, establishing a design language that remains central to Canadian numismatics today.
