5 Cents - Edward VII

The 1902 Canadian 5-cent coin was issued during the first year of King Edward VII's reign, following the death of Queen Victoria. These coins were minted to facilitate daily commerce across the Dominion of Canada, maintaining the specifications established under the Victorian era's currency standards. As a small silver denomination, often referred to as a fish scale due to its diminutive size and thin profile, it served a vital role in the transition of the British monarchy's representation on colonial coinage.

The obverse features the effigy of King Edward VII designed by G.W. De Saulles, the engraver at the Royal Mint in London. His design sought to provide a dignified, realistic portrait of the King, which was adopted across the British Empire. The reverse displays the traditional Canadian maple wreath motif surrounding the denomination, a design that had become a standard symbol of Canadian national identity by the early 20th century. While these coins were widely circulated and prone to wear, they remain a staple for collectors interested in the shifting heraldry of the Edwardian period.
