5 Euros (Football)

The 2004 Austrian 5 Euro coin was issued to celebrate the hosting of the UEFA Euro 2004 football championship. As Austria held a deep cultural interest in the sport, the mint produced this commemorative piece to bridge the gap between national pride and the excitement surrounding the international tournament. It serves as a representative example of Austria's tradition of issuing high-quality collector coins that mark significant societal and sporting milestones.

Designed by Herbert Wähner, the coin features a dynamic composition capturing the energy of a match. The obverse depicts a stylized football player in motion, emphasizing the fluidity and athleticism of the game, while the reverse displays the traditional Austrian coat of arms surrounded by symbols representing the country's nine federal states. Upon its release, it was well-received by numismatists for its intricate engraving and its clear thematic focus on European integration through sports.
