5 Euros (Herbert von Karajan)

The 2008 Austrian 5 Euro coin was issued by the Austrian Mint to commemorate the centenary of the birth of the legendary conductor Herbert von Karajan. Karajan, a native of Salzburg, was one of the most influential conductors of the 20th century and served as the principal conductor of the Berlin Philharmonic for over three decades. This commemorative piece honors his immense contribution to classical music and his status as a titan of the European cultural landscape.

The coin was designed by Mint engraver Herbert Wähner, who opted for a dynamic portrait of Karajan in his signature conducting pose. The reverse side features the familiar heraldic eagle design common to Austrian euro coinage, framed by the nine shields of the Austrian federal states. The issue was well-received by both numismatists and music enthusiasts, serving as a respectful tribute to a figure who profoundly shaped the aesthetic of orchestral performance.
