5 Sovereigns - Elizabeth II (Battle of Britain - Plane Spotter)

The 2020 Isle of Man five-sovereign coin, often colloquially referred to by collectors as the Battle of Britain 'Plane Spotter' issue, was struck to commemorate the 80th anniversary of the historic air campaign. The Isle of Man Treasury commissioned this commemorative series to honor the resilience of the British people and the pilots who served during the pivotal summer of 1940. This specific denomination is part of a larger numismatic program that utilizes legal tender status on the island to celebrate significant milestones in British military and aviation history.

The design features a detailed artistic interpretation of civilians or personnel tracking aircraft, capturing the vigilance required during the defense of the United Kingdom. While the specific designer of this particular reverse remains less widely publicized than those of Royal Mint issues, the series follows the tradition of high-relief numismatic art intended for the collector market. Upon its release, the coin was received as a tangible tribute to the 'Few,' finding favor among military history enthusiasts and numismatists focused on modern commemorative bullion and proof coins.
