Where it came from
The 2020 Australian Olympic Team 50-cent coin was minted by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the Australian athletes participating in the Tokyo Olympic Games, which were delayed until 2021 due to the global pandemic. The coin serves as a tribute to the spirit of the Australian team and reflects the unique historical context of an Olympic Games held under extraordinary international circumstances.
The reverse design features a stylized athlete in motion, surrounded by the iconic five Olympic rings and the Australian team's branding, emphasizing agility and national pride. The obverse depicts the definitive effigy of Queen Elizabeth II by Jody Clark, which has been standard on Australian coinage since 2019. This particular version was issued with a gold-plated finish to heighten its collectible appeal, a common practice for commemorative releases aimed at numismatic enthusiasts.
