Where it came from
The 2012 Australian Miniature Money Gold Proof set was released by the Royal Australian Mint to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the discontinuation of the two-cent coin from circulation. These miniature strikes were crafted in 99.99% gold, reimagining the iconic decimal currency designs that were first introduced to Australia in 1966.
The obverse of the coin features Ian Rank-Broadley’s fourth portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, which has been a staple of Australian coinage since 1999. The reverse retains Stuart Devlin’s classic illustration of the frilled-neck lizard, a design celebrated for its distinct representation of Australian fauna. While the original circulating coins were minted in bronze, this proof series was intended primarily for numismatic collectors seeking a prestigious, precious-metal tribute to Australia's decimal heritage.
