The 60 reis countermarked coin emerged during a period of significant economic volatility in colonial Brazil. Following the restoration of the Portuguese throne and the exhaustion of the state treasury, the colonial administration initiated a series of currency revaluations. This specific issue involved taking existing half-tostão coins and applying a countermark to adjust their nominal value to 60 reis, allowing the crown to circulate coinage more efficiently without the need for immediate new minting.

The design reflects the practical, often austere necessity of the 17th-century Portuguese monetary system. The countermarking process was overseen by local mint authorities who stamped the value directly onto existing silver pieces.
