10 Réis - Maria I (Countermarked 5 Réis)

The 1786 10 Réis coin reflects the economic complexities of the Portuguese colonial empire in Brazil under the reign of Queen Maria I. During this period, the administration frequently struggled with currency shortages and fluctuating metal values, leading to the common practice of countermarking existing circulation coins to adjust their legal tender value. This specific piece began its life as a 5 Réis coin, which was subsequently stamped with a '10' countermark to effectively double its denomination to combat local inflation and facilitate daily trade.

The design follows the traditional colonial coinage standards of the era, featuring the Portuguese coat of arms and the royal monogram. The execution of the countermark was often done in provincial mints or authorized regional centers, resulting in variations in the strike depth and placement. These coins were received by the populace as a necessary pragmatic solution to fiscal instability, though they are now valued by numismatists primarily as artifacts of the shifting monetary policies in 18th-century Brazil.
