80 Réis - Pedro II (Large Crown, Bahia)

The 80 Réis coin featuring the portrait of King Pedro II of Portugal was minted during a period of transition for the Portuguese colonial empire. Following the discovery of gold in the Minas Gerais region of Brazil, the Portuguese crown sought to formalize and stabilize the currency circulating within its South American territories. These large-format copper coins were struck at the Bahia mint, which served as a crucial administrative and economic hub, facilitating the transition toward a more standardized monetary system in the late 17th century.

The design of this issue typically features the royal coat of arms on one side and the denomination within a wreath or ornate border on the other. This specific type, characterized by the 'Large Crown' motif, reflects the baroque aesthetic favored by the Braganza dynasty to project authority and permanence across the Atlantic. These coins were received by the local population and colonial merchants as a necessary medium of exchange for daily commerce, though they were often subject to heavy wear due to the harsh environmental conditions and the intensity of colonial trade.
