Where it came from
The 1992 Isle of Man 1/10th Crown was issued to commemorate the America's Cup sailing competition held in San Diego that year. As a British Crown Dependency, the Isle of Man frequently authorized commemorative coinage featuring the portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, utilizing these releases to celebrate international sporting events and capture the interest of numismatists globally.
The design typically features the effigy of the Queen alongside nautical themes relevant to the America's Cup, such as depictions of racing yachts cutting through waves. These coins were produced as part of a series intended to appeal to both sailing enthusiasts and collectors of commemorative decimal currency, reflecting the island's long-standing tradition of issuing coins that bridge the gap between regional identity and international subject matter.
