Where it came from
The 2002 ⅕ Crown coin was issued by the Isle of Man to commemorate the FIFA World Cup held in Japan and South Korea. Released as part of a broader series of legal tender numismatic issues, these coins were produced under the authority of the Isle of Man government by the Pobjoy Mint, a private mint noted for its long-standing relationship with the island and its creative approach to commemorative coinage.
The design features a dynamic depiction of a footballer in a kicking motion, specifically angled to the right, intended to capture the energy and global reach of the 2002 tournament. As an Isle of Man issue, the obverse maintains the traditional portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, framing the modern sporting subject within a formal numismatic tradition. It was marketed primarily to collectors and enthusiasts of both sports memorabilia and commemorative currency.
