Where it came from
The 2002 ⅕ Crown coin was issued by the Isle of Man to commemorate the FIFA World Cup held in Japan and South Korea. As a self-governing British Crown Dependency, the Isle of Man frequently commissions commemorative coinage featuring themes of international significance to appeal to global collectors. This specific issue reflects the heightened excitement surrounding the first World Cup tournament to be hosted in Asia.
The design features a portrait of Queen Elizabeth II on the obverse, rendered in the effigy typically used on Manx currency during that era. The reverse side depicts imagery celebrating the tournament, consistent with the thematic commemorative series produced by the Pobjoy Mint, which held the contract for Isle of Man coinage for many years. The piece was marketed toward collectors of sports-themed numismatics and royal memorabilia, prioritizing a decorative aesthetic over standard circulating currency utility.
