Gold Ecu - Louis I of Nevers

The gold ecu was minted in 1337 during the reign of Louis I, Count of Flanders, Nevers, and Rethel. This period marked a tumultuous transition in medieval European economy as the County of Flanders sought to assert its sovereignty through coinage. The issuance was a strategic move to stabilize local currency amidst the growing tensions that would soon erupt into the Hundred Years' War, reflecting the count's desire to project wealth and authority in the face of French and English political pressures.

The coin follows the iconography typical of late medieval gold coinage, featuring a seated or standing monarch on the obverse, a stylistic choice intended to emphasize the divine right and terrestrial power of the Flemish count. These pieces were designed to be prestige items, often imitating the weight and purity standards set by the French royal mints to ensure acceptance across international trade routes. While records of the specific engravers remain largely lost to time, the piece is recognized by numismatists as a significant example of fourteenth-century Flemish minting practices.
