Where it came from
The Falus was a copper denomination utilized within the Durrani Empire, which was founded by Ahmad Shah Durrani and later expanded by his successors in the late 18th century. Minted in the regional capital of Multan around 1780 during the reign of Taimur Shah, these coins served as essential small-change currency for daily commerce in a region that acted as a critical crossroads between Central Asia, Persia, and the Indian subcontinent.
The design of these copper coins reflects the stylistic influences of the Mughal numismatic tradition, typically featuring Persian calligraphy that identifies the ruler and the minting location. Because these coins were intended for common market use, they were struck on heavy copper planchets meant to withstand frequent circulation. They are regarded by historians as significant artifacts of the Durrani administrative reach, showcasing how the empire attempted to standardize economic activity across its diverse territories.
