½ Liang - Bei [?]

The Ban Liang coin represents a pivotal moment in Chinese numismatic history, emerging during the Qin Dynasty following the unification of China under Qin Shi Huang in 221 BCE. Designed as part of a centralized economic reform, it replaced a chaotic array of regional currencies with a standardized circular shape featuring a square hole, a design intended to facilitate stringing and bulk transport. The inscription, meaning 'half tael' or 'half liang', reflected the new official weight standard imposed across the empire to stabilize trade and taxation.

The aesthetic of the Ban Liang was intentionally minimalist and functional, prioritizing state control over intricate decoration. While early examples were cast with rougher finishes, the design philosophy emphasized durability and weight consistency. It was received as an essential tool for imperial administration, solidifying the authority of the Qin state, though its circulation continued into the early Western Han Dynasty before being superseded by the Wu Zhu coinage, which offered more precise weight management.
