½ Liang (Lü Zhi type; 8 Zhu weight)

The Ban Liang coin represents a pivotal moment in Chinese numismatic history, emerging during the transition from the Warring States period to the centralized authority of the Han Dynasty. This specific variant, associated with the reforms under Empress Lü Zhi circa 186 BCE, was an attempt to stabilize the monetary system by standardizing weight and purity. The design follows the classic round-coin-with-square-hole format, an enduring template intended to reflect the philosophical concept of a round heaven and a square earth, serving as a physical manifestation of imperial legitimacy and economic control.

The design of the 8-zhu Ban Liang was crafted to address the practical challenges of state-led currency issuance. By specifying a heavier weight, the administration aimed to curb the circulation of lighter, debased private coins that had plagued earlier eras. While the transition from the preceding heavier coins to these standardized pieces was met with bureaucratic friction and economic volatility, the design solidified the calligraphic aesthetic of seal script on currency, influencing the iconography of Chinese coinage for over two millennia.
