Where it came from
The Ban Liang coin represents a pivotal moment in Chinese history, issued under the decree of Qin Shi Huang, the first emperor of a unified China, following his conquest of the Warring States in 221 BCE. Before this standardization, various regional states utilized diverse currencies in shapes ranging from spades to knives; the circular design with a central square hole was adopted to simplify trade, representing the philosophical harmony between heaven and earth.
The design is characterized by its simple, functional aesthetic, featuring the two characters for 'half' and 'ounce' cast in relief. While the coins were mass-produced in bronze molds, their execution varies, reflecting the technical limitations and rapid production demands of the era. The form became the template for Chinese coinage for over two thousand years, serving as a testament to the administrative centralization required to manage the newly formed Qin dynasty.
