100 Bullets: The US of Anger #3

The US of Anger arc, comprising issues one through five of the broader 100 Bullets series, was published by Vertigo Comics starting in 2002. Created by writer Brian Azzarello and artist Eduardo Risso, the series emerged from the gritty noir traditions of the late nineties, focusing on a mysterious agent who offers individuals the opportunity to exact vengeance with an untraceable handgun and ammunition. This specific arc shifts the narrative scope, exploring the ideological fracture points of American society during a period of heightened national anxiety.

Eduardo Risso’s design for the series is defined by high-contrast ink work and heavy shadows, a stylistic choice intended to mirror the moral ambiguity of the characters. This visual language became a hallmark of the Vertigo imprint, earning the creators critical acclaim for their ability to blend hard-boiled crime fiction with a surreal, systemic conspiracy. The series was well-received for its tight plotting and its unflinching look at the consequences of state-sanctioned violence.
